Libya’s prime minister has confirmed that the country’s army chief, General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, was killed in an aircraft crash in Turkey.
General al-Haddad was travelling with four others aboard a Falcon 50 business jet that departed from Ankara on Tuesday evening. According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, contact with the aircraft was lost at 20:52 local time, approximately 42 minutes after take-off.
The jet, which was en route to Tripoli, had issued a distress call requesting an emergency landing shortly before communication was cut. Wreckage was later located southwest of Ankara, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
In a subsequent statement, Yerlikaya said police identified the crash site near the village of Kesikkavak in Ankara’s Haymana district, adding that the public would be kept informed as the inquiry continues.
Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Unity prime minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, described the deaths of General al-Haddad and other senior military officials as a “major loss” for the country, praising their service and dedication.
The general and his delegation had been in Turkey for discussions aimed at strengthening military and security cooperation between the two nations.
Turkey has played a significant role in Libya since its 2019 intervention to support the Tripoli-based government, developing close political, military, and economic ties in the years since.
