The bar chart compares the numbers of men and women participating in further education in Britain during three different periods, distinguishing between full-time and part-time study.
Overall, part-time education attracted significantly more participants than full-time study
across all years. While male participation in part-time education showed a slight decline before recovering, the number of women studying part-time increased steadily and eventually surpassed that of men. Full-time enrolments rose for both genders over the period, with a more pronounced growth among women.
Among men, part-time participation was highest in the earliest period, then declined in the middle years before rising again by the final period. In contrast, the number of men in full-time education increased consistently across the three periods, indicating a gradual shift towards full-time study. Despite this growth, full-time figures remained considerably lower than those for part-time education.
For women, participation in part-time education increased markedly throughout the period, showing sustained growth and overtaking male figures by the final year. Full-time education among women also rose substantially, with particularly strong growth in the later period. By the end of the timeframe, women outnumbered men in both full-time and part-time further education, highlighting a significant change in educational participation patterns.
