The line graph compares the average daily number of commuters in the UK who travelled by car, bus, or train over a sixty-year period.
Overall, travelling by car was the dominant mode of transport throughout the timeframe and showed a clear upward trend. In contrast, bus usage declined gradually, while train travel increased steadily and eventually overtook buses.
Car travel began as the most common form of commuting and rose consistently over time, with particularly noticeable growth in the later years. After a period of moderate increase in the earlier decades, the number of car commuters accelerated towards the end of the period, reaching its highest level by the final year shown.
By comparison, bus travel followed an opposite pattern. It started at a relatively high level but experienced a gradual and continuous decline across the period. Train commuting, however, displayed sustained growth. After a slow rise initially, it increased more rapidly in the later years and surpassed bus usage. By the end of the period, trains had become the second most popular commuting option, although still significantly less common than car travel.
