The line graph illustrates global water consumption by sector over the twentieth century, while the table compares water use indicators in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo in a single year.
Overall, agriculture accounted for the largest share of global water use and increased far more rapidly than the other sectors. In contrast, domestic consumption remained the least significant worldwide, and substantial disparities are evident between the two countries in terms of water use.
In global terms, agricultural water consumption rose steadily throughout the period and accelerated markedly in the second half of the century. Industrial use also increased continuously, although at a slower rate than agriculture, particularly after the mid-century point. Domestic water consumption followed a similar upward pattern but remained comparatively low and grew more gradually than the other two sectors.
The table highlights sharp contrasts between Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Brazil had a much larger population and vastly more irrigated land, which was reflected in considerably higher water consumption per person. By comparison, the Democratic Republic of Congo recorded minimal irrigated land and very low per-capita water use, indicating limited access to and utilisation of water resources relative to Brazil.
