The graph below shows the average number of UK commuters travelling each day by car, bus or train between 1970 and 2030.

The three pie charts illustrate how total school expenditure was allocated across five categories in the years 1981, 1991, and 2001.

Overall, teachers’ salaries accounted for the largest share of spending in all three years, while insurance represented the smallest proportion despite a steady increase over time. Spending priorities shifted noticeably, particularly in furniture and equipment and in resources such as books.

In 1981, the largest proportion of the budget was devoted to teachers’ salaries, followed by other workers’ salaries. Resources and furniture and equipment received equal shares, whereas insurance accounted for only a minimal fraction. By 1991, the share allocated to teachers’ salaries had increased further, while spending on furniture and equipment declined sharply. At the same time, expenditure on resources rose, and insurance saw a slight increase.

By 2001, teachers’ salaries remained the dominant category, although their share had fallen slightly compared with 1991. In contrast, spending on furniture and equipment rose substantially, becoming one of the more significant components of the budget. Resources experienced a marked reduction, while insurance continued to grow, though it still represented a relatively small proportion overall.
