There is considerable debate over whether personal success is primarily the result of individual effort or external factors such as luck and social background. While hard work is undeniably important, this essay argues that success is shaped by a combination of effort and circumstances.

Those who emphasize hard work argue that persistence, discipline, and determination enable individuals to overcome obstacles. From this perspective, people who consistently invest time and effort in developing their skills are more likely to achieve long-term success. Numerous examples of self-made individuals are often cited to support the belief that effort outweighs circumstance.

However, others contend that success is heavily influenced by factors beyond personal control. Social background can determine access to quality education, professional networks, and financial resources. Similarly, chance events, such as being in the right place at the right time, can create opportunities that are not equally available to everyone.

In my view, while hard work is essential, it is rarely sufficient on its own. Structural advantages and luck often determine how far individual effort can translate into success. Therefore, success should be understood as the outcome of both personal commitment and external conditions.
