Some people believe that children should be taught financial management skills at school, while others think this responsibility belongs to parents. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
There is growing debate over whether financial literacy should be taught formally in schools or left to parental guidance. While some argue that parents are best positioned to teach children about money, others contend that schools play a crucial role in equipping young people with essential financial skills. This essay discusses both perspectives and presents a reasoned opinion.
Those who support parental responsibility argue that financial habits are closely linked to family values and socioeconomic background. Parents can provide practical, real-life lessons such as budgeting household expenses or managing allowances. Moreover, they are more familiar with their children’s maturity levels and can tailor financial guidance accordingly.
In contrast, proponents of school-based financial education emphasize equality and consistency. Not all parents possess adequate financial knowledge, which can result in significant disparities among students. By integrating financial management into the school curriculum, governments can ensure that all children acquire fundamental skills such as saving, investing, and responsible spending, regardless of their background.
In my view, although parents play an important supportive role, schools should take primary responsibility for teaching financial literacy. A structured educational framework ensures that every child gains the knowledge required to make informed financial decisions in adulthood.
