Some people believe that competitive sports have a negative impact on children, while others think they are beneficial. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
The role of competitive sports in children’s development is widely debated. While some argue that competition places excessive pressure on young people, others maintain that it offers significant physical and psychological benefits. This essay examines both perspectives before presenting a reasoned opinion.
Those who oppose competitive sports argue that they can create unhealthy stress and anxiety among children. Intense competition may encourage a win-at-all-costs mentality, leading to disappointment, low self-esteem, or even burnout when expectations are not met. Furthermore, children who perform poorly may feel excluded or demotivated, which can negatively affect their overall well-being.
On the other hand, supporters contend that competitive sports foster essential life skills. Participation in structured competition teaches children discipline, resilience, teamwork, and goal-setting. Moreover, regular physical activity contributes to better health and helps young people develop confidence through achievement and self-improvement.
In my view, competitive sports are beneficial provided they are managed responsibly. When emphasis is placed on personal development rather than winning alone, competition can play a valuable role in children’s holistic growth.
