Some people say that school children should be mainly taught about the literature (e.g fiction and poetry) of their own country because it is more important than that of other countries. To what extent do you agree?


Some people argue that school children should focus primarily on studying the literature of their own country, as it is considered more important than works from other nations. I partly agree with this view, as national literature plays a vital role in cultural identity, although exposure to international literature is also essential for a well-rounded education.


On the one hand, teaching a country’s own literature helps students understand their cultural heritage, values, and historical background. Works of fiction and poetry often reflect national experiences, social issues, and traditions, enabling young people to develop a sense of identity and belonging. This understanding can strengthen cultural awareness and appreciation for one’s own society. As a result, studying national literature can foster pride and continuity between generations. For example, reading classic novels or poems written by local authors allows students to connect with their country’s history and collective experiences.


On the other hand, limiting education mainly to domestic literature may restrict students’ global perspective. Literature from other countries exposes learners to different cultures, beliefs, and ways of thinking, which is increasingly important in a globalised world. Such exposure encourages empathy, open-mindedness, and critical thinking by allowing students to compare diverse human experiences.


Consequently, international literature helps prepare young people to engage effectively with people from different backgrounds. For instance, studying foreign novels can deepen students’ understanding of global issues and cultural diversity.


In conclusion, while it is important for school children to study the literature of their own country to develop cultural identity, this should not be done at the expense of international works. A balanced approach that includes both national and global literature offers the greatest educational benefit. Therefore, I only partly agree that domestic literature should be given greater importance.
